Tonny Mawejje's story
Former Uganda Cranes midfielder. AFCON 2017. A playing career that spanned domestic leagues and overseas clubs, and a determination that opportunity should reach every young person.

A career built on opportunity
Tonny Mawejje, is a former Uganda Cranes midfielder. His playing career ended in 2022. He helped Uganda qualify for and played at AFCON 2017, ending a 38-year absence from the continental tournament, a defining moment for Ugandan football.
The bursary story
When his family could not meet school fees, Tonny received a bursary at Masaka Secondary School, an opportunity described in a Daily Monitor interview published in September 2022. That experience shaped his belief that opportunity, not talent alone, decides how far a young person can go.
Domestic career
Tonny's domestic career included spells at Masaka LC, KCC/KCCA, Police FC and URA FC, clubs that shaped him as a midfielder and a leader on the pitch.
Overseas career
His career took him beyond Uganda to clubs including IBV Vestmannaeyjar, Golden Arrows, FK Haugesund, Valur, Throttur Reykjavik, KF Tirana and Al-Arabi SC in Kuwait, a journey that broadened his experience of the game and the world.
AFCON 2017 qualification and finals
Mawejje played a central role in Uganda Cranes' historic campaign to qualify for and compete at the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations in Gabon, a landmark achievement for the national team and its supporters.

Retirement and a move into coaching
Tonny's playing career concluded in 2022. In September 2026, Kawowo Sports reported Tonny Mawejje's appointment as head coach at Muteesa I Royal University, the latest step in a move from the pitch to the dugout and to developing the next generation of players. It is a natural extension of a life spent in the game, and of a belief that the next generation deserves the opportunities he once had to fight for.
Motivation for TM6 Foundation
